How to Read Hydraulic Hose Layline Markings Before Replacement

A hydraulic hose layline is useful identification evidence, but it is not a complete replacement specification. Read it in three passes: copy what is printed, verify what each field means, and leave every unanswered question unresolved.

The safe order matters. Put the machine in the condition required by its manual and the employer’s procedure before approaching the hose. Then photograph the installed context, photograph the readable print, and transcribe it without filling in missing characters.

Do not chase the print around a pressurized machine

Turning a machine off does not by itself prove that hydraulic energy is controlled. OSHA’s hazardous-energy rule for covered general-industry servicing requires a machine-specific energy-control procedure, control of stored or residual energy, and verification of isolation before work begins. Follow the controlling machine and workplace procedure; the OSHA lockout/tagout standard is not a substitute for those instructions.

If the safe state has not been established, stop. Do not rotate a hose, flex it, wipe a suspected leak, remove a guard, loosen a connection, or put a hand near escaping fluid just to expose more printing.

The UK’s Health and Safety Executive lists searching for hydraulic leaks with bare hands and failing to release pressure among dangerous operator errors. Its high-pressure fluid guidance warns that injection through the skin can require amputation or major surgery. The Gates Safe Hydraulics manual treats an injection injury as a medical emergency and directs immediate emergency medical treatment. Never use touch to confirm a leak.

Catch the layline in its installed context

Once safe access is established, begin with one wide photograph. Show the hose route and enough of the machine to identify which line is being recorded. A close-up of perfect printing is much less useful if it can no longer be matched to the boom end, valve end, cylinder end, pump end, or another unambiguous location.

Next, photograph both connection areas without disturbing them. Then work along the visible layline in overlapping frames. Keep the full-resolution originals; labeled copies can help with handoff, but the untouched files preserve detail that a crop or annotation may hide.

Write down the machine make and model, fleet or unit number, hose function, starting end, direction of the photo sequence, and the date. If an OEM part number is already documented, record where it came from. Do not turn an unverified number on an old tag into an OEM specification.

Copy first; interpret second

Transcribe the marking exactly as it appears. Preserve spaces, dashes, slashes, decimal points, pressure units, size notation, standards, and symbols. Put a question mark beside an uncertain character or label that position unreadable. A confident guess is harder to correct than a visible gap.

Its example identifies fields for brand, part number, size and inside diameter, agency specifications, pressure, temperature, bend information, fitting family, and performance icons. Those are possible fields, not a universal order. Another hose family may omit some of them, use different icons, or encode traceability differently. Decode a brand, series, date or lot field only with current information for that exact manufacturer and product family.

Manufacturer and product identity

Look first for a manufacturer name or logo, then for a family, series, or catalog identifier. Keep the manufacturer and identifier together. A series number without its maker can point the next person toward the wrong catalog.

Size notation

A layline may show a dash size, nominal inside diameter, DN value, inches, or more than one of those forms. Record the notation and unit exactly. Do not convert it in the field and discard the original print.

Pressure and temperature

Write down the complete pressure marking and its units. Do not shorten MPa, bar, or psi to a bare number. A printed pressure value also does not establish the allowable pressure of the finished assembly; hose, ends, and the approved assembly system still have to be verified together.

The Gates Safe Hydraulics manual separates hose selection into size, temperature, application, material, pressure, ends or couplings, and delivery. The layline may supply evidence for some of those fields, but it does not close the whole selection process.

Temperature markings and performance icons need the same restraint. Record what is present, then use the manufacturer’s current legend and product data. Do not infer fluid compatibility or the machine’s required temperature range from an icon alone.

Standards, approvals, and traceability

Copy every standard designation, approval mark, date code, lot code, or other traceability field that is actually visible. Do not call a code a manufacture date unless the manufacturer identifies it that way. Color, character spacing, or a familiar-looking code is not enough to decode an unknown product.

Keep three columns in your head: printed, verified, unresolved

The printed column is literal: the text, units, symbols, and icons visible on the cover. The verified column contains only meanings confirmed in current manufacturer or machine information. Everything else remains unresolved.

That separation prevents the layline from answering questions it cannot settle. The print alone does not establish both fitting connections, sealing forms, overall assembly length, elbow clocking, machine function, route, movement, fluid compatibility, minimum bend requirement, OEM approval, or whether the installed hose was correct in the first place.

For the connection task, use the separate guide to hydraulic fitting identification by thread, seat, seal, and measurement. For a pressure substitution, use the complete compatibility checks for a higher-pressure hose. A layline can contribute evidence to both decisions; it cannot make either decision alone.

When the print is worn or missing

Do not reconstruct a missing identifier from hose color, outside diameter, braid appearance, one pressure number, or a similar-looking line nearby. Mark the missing span as unreadable and keep the photos tied to the complete assembly.

Before qualified removal, record the overall length and coupling orientation under the controlling procedure. Gates says that if the original layline is worn off, the old hose should then be cut and its inside diameter measured. That destructive identification step belongs to qualified personnel after the installed context has been recorded—not to someone trying to expose print on the machine.

Make uncertainty visible at handoff

Build the handoff in the same order another person can audit it. Put the wide route image first, follow it with both connection areas and the overlapping layline frames, then attach the exact transcription and machine identity. End with the unresolved characters and questions. Do not bury uncertainty inside a polished parts description.

The best handoff question is not, “Does this number look close?” Ask which details were verified from the layline, which came from machine or OEM information, and which were confirmed in the hose and fitting manufacturer’s current data.
